1. The Universal ZXing WiFi Protocol
A WiFi QR code is not a hyperlink and does not open a website. Instead, it is a two-dimensional matrix barcode encoded according to the universal open-source ZXing WiFi URI standard.
When you enter your network information, WiFiQR Tool structures your data into a compact, standardized string:
T: Authentication Protocol (e.g. WPA, WEP, or nopass)
S: SSID (The exact name of your wireless network)
P: Passphrase (The private pre-shared Wi-Fi key)
H: Hidden Flag (true if network SSID broadcast is hidden)
Because this payload structure is natively integrated into modern mobile operating systems, phone camera lenses recognize the Wi-Fi credentials immediately upon optical detection.
2. How to Generate a Code in 3 Steps
Enter Credentials
Input your network name (SSID), choose your security protocol (WPA/WPA2/WPA3), and type your password.
Customize Display
Optionally adjust contrast colors, upload your company logo, or pick a ready-to-print tabletop sign format.
Export or Print
Export high-resolution PNG images or scalable SVG vectors, or print directly from your browser.
3. How to Scan on iPhone and Android
iPhone & iPad (iOS 11+)
- Open the native Camera app from your Lock Screen or Control Center.
- Hold your phone so the QR code appears within the camera viewfinder.
- A yellow badge saying "Join [Network] Network" will appear on screen.
- Tap the badge, then tap Join to authenticate.
Android (Android 10+)
- Launch your native Camera app, or pull down Quick Settings and tap Scan QR code (or open Google Lens).
- Frame the barcode in your screen.
- A notification badge displaying your network name with "Connect to network" will pop up.
- Tap it to establish an instant wireless connection.
4. Troubleshooting Scanning Issues
High Contrast is Critical
Always generate dark QR modules on a light, solid background. Inverted codes (white modules on dark background) often fail on legacy camera sensors.
Minimum Print Dimensions
Print codes at least 1.5 × 1.5 inches (3.8 cm) for table cards, or 2 to 3 inches for wall frames to enable scanning from several feet away.
Avoid Glare & Reflections
High-gloss laminating pouches reflect indoor lighting, blinding phone camera sensors. Use matte lamination or anti-reflective acrylic holders.
Correct Character Escaping
If your password has semicolons, colons, or backslashes, WiFiQR Tool automatically escapes them according to specification to prevent syntax corruption.
