How to Share Your WiFi Password

The easiest and most reliable ways to share your network connection without spelling out complex passwords.

Method 1: WiFi QR Code (Fastest & Universal)

A WiFi QR code encodes the network SSID, authentication type, and password using standard protocol. Any modern smartphone can scan it natively with its built-in camera app.

1

Enter your WiFi details

Type your network name (SSID), select your security protocol (WPA/WPA2/WPA3), and input your password.

2

Generate and save the QR code

Your QR code generates instantly. Download it as a PNG or SVG, or click 'Print' for a formatted card.

3

Have guests scan with their camera

Guests open their iPhone or Android camera, point it at the code, and tap the notification prompt to join.

Method 2: Apple Device-to-Device Sharing

Apple devices can share passwords over Bluetooth, provided both devices are running updated iOS/iPadOS/macOS versions and have each other in Contacts:

  • Ensure both devices have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled.
  • Have your guest select your network in their Wi-Fi settings.
  • A prompt will appear on your device asking if you want to share the password. Tap Share Password.

Note: This method does not work if your guest uses Android or Windows.

Method 3: Android Device Sharing

Android 10 and newer devices can display a connection QR code directly from the system settings:

  1. Open Settings > Network & internet > Internet.
  2. Tap the gear icon next to your currently connected network.
  3. Tap Share and authenticate with your fingerprint or PIN.
  4. A temporary QR code is shown on your screen for your guest to scan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about WiFi QR codes, privacy, and device compatibility.

Why does Apple's native WiFi sharing prompt sometimes fail?

Apple's native sharing only works between Apple devices that have each other saved in iCloud contacts. It does not work when sharing with Android, Windows, or Chromebook users. A QR code works universally across all platforms.

Do guests see the password when scanning?

Most mobile operating systems connect automatically without showing the password in large plain text, though the password is technically encoded inside the QR payload so the device can authenticate.

Should I share my main or guest network?

Whenever possible, create and share a dedicated Guest network. This isolates visitors from private smart home devices, network drives, and security cameras.
